The Problem: Austria’s Environmental Crisis Is Growing, and Underestimated

Climate Extremes
Austria is experiencing record-breaking heatwaves and more frequent floods. These extreme events are no longer rare but are becoming the new normal, putting public health and infrastructure at risk. In 2023, Austria recorded a +2.3 °C above-average temperature, the hottest year in history.

Public Awareness Gap
Many residents underestimate the urgency of the climate crisis.
Without proper education or access to clear, localised information, environmental risks are often ignored or misunderstood. In 2024, climate-related disasters cost Austria over €1.7 billion through floods, heatwaves, and crop destruction.

Economic Impact
Climate change is already hurting Austria’s economy, from crop damage and disrupted tourism in the Alps to rising energy costs. Yet many people and businesses remain unprepared for what lies ahead. Extreme heat is now causing around 2,500 deaths annually, mostly among older and vulnerable populations.

Our Mission: To raise awareness and inspire action by creating accessible content, tools, and community-led solutions that address the social, economic, and environmental impacts of climate change.
The Vision: A future where every individual and community is informed, resilient, and empowered to thrive despite the growing challenges of a changing climate.

Recent Community Outreach
At Klimena, our community outreach reflects our mission to raise awareness and inspire action through accessible, people-driven solutions. From organizing food drives for flood-affected families to fundraising for homeless and refugee communities, each project puts our values into practice by addressing the social and economic impacts of climate change with compassion and collaboration. By turning awareness into action, we aim to build stronger, more resilient communities ready to face the challenges of a changing world.
Food Drives for Flood-Affected Communities
In response to floods across Austria, Klimena partnered with local food drives to support families and individuals affected by these events. Partnering with community organizations and local markets, our volunteers assist in the collection and distribution of essential supplies to help those effected rebuilding their lives.

Winter Relief for Homeless and Refugee Families
Every winter winter, Klimena organizes a series of school fundraisers to support homeless individuals and refugee families in our community. Through these sales, we aimed to provide warmth, comfort, and care. From essentials for those facing the cold to thoughtful gifts for refugee children during the holiday season. The image on the left shows a letter we received, thanking us for our efforts and the positive impact they brought.

Columbia University / UN SDSN Conference for UNGA 2025
Klimena took part in the Columbia University / UN SDSN Conference for UNGA 2025, joining global leaders and youth advocates to discuss sustainability and climate action. As part of our ongoing engagement with international initiatives, this event offered a space to make valuable connections and insight into current efforts driving climate resilience and education worldwide.
Climate Education for Everyone
Klimena is dedicated to educating and empowering anyone who wants to learn about climate change, its impacts, and the ways we can adapt and thrive. Through accessible content, discussions, and community resources, we make complex environmental issues easier to understand and act on. Our goal is to help individuals of all ages become informed, confident, and proactive in building a sustainable future.

Message from the Founder
"When I started Klimena, my goal was simple: to make climate awareness feel real, local, and actionable. Climate change can seem distant or abstract, a problem for politicians or scientists to solve, but in truth it affects every part of our daily lives, from the air we breathe to the water that sustains us.
Klimena was built to bridge that gap. We create research-based toolkits, articles, visuals and podcasts that help people understand environmental challenges in a clear and relatable way. From floods in Austria to global energy transitions, we aim to turn data into action and awareness into resilience.
I believe that real change begins when people feel informed and empowered. Klimena is not just a platform; it is a community of students, researchers, and young leaders working together to reimagine how we talk about sustainability. Every project we release is meant to educate, inspire, and push for meaningful progress.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we can build a future that is informed, inclusive, and sustainable."
